Rules of Shopping: To Buy, or Not to Buy…….
Earlier today, I fell on my ass twice: the first time was after slipping in some water on my kitchen floor, a few hours later my right foot got caught in the strap of my Marc Jacobs handbag. This put a slight dent in my initial plans to load my closet with a few favorite “Stace Face” pieces by Alice + Olivia.
Alice + Olivia – Stace Wedge • Alice + Olivia • $398
Alice + Olivia – Stace Face Frida Intarsia Cotton Cardigan – Cream • Alice + Olivia • $400
Alexander McQueen – Gold-tone, Swarovski Crystal And Faux Pearl Bracelet • Alexander McQueen • $785
Alexander McQueen – Round-frame Acetate Sunglasses – Black • Alexander McQueen • $375
Theory ‘Super Slim Edition’ Stretch Wool Pants • Theory • $275
MAC Pigment • M·A·C • $22
Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder • Laura Mercier • $38
Consequently, I sacrificed trying on a pair of wedges with my temporarily-crippled foot while thoughts such as “I should’ve bought the shoes”, “So much for my cardio routine later” and “I hope I don’t have to skip the gym all week” ran through my mind as if it was an Olympic marathon. Then it occurred to me… there is one “shopping rule” which everybody must adhere to.
If you see it, love it, and feel as if you may regret leaving the store without it….. BUY IT! I have made that mistake way too many times. And just to clarify, my definition here of “way too many times” in this type of situation is “more than once”.
Last year around the holidays, a friend of mine from FIDM (whose name I won’t mention to avoid embarrassment) took a trip to Japan and made this mistake. I found this out over Facebook, while I was out with a few friends for dinner. As I scrolled through my news feed, I saw: “I should’ve bought that coat while I was in Japan, and need to go back soon for it. Tokyo please wait for me!” I may have missed a few words or phrases (except for the last sentence) but this was definitely the message. My reaction was screaming “OH… MY… GOD! Are you kidding me?!” (insert a few swear words). This had started both my friends and the waitress, who had then approached our table, and then offered to come back in a few minutes.
As my friends continued to stare at me like I had gone crazy (perhaps rightfully so at the time), I told them “It isn’t that bad….. it’s just a friend of mine. He went on vacation and forgot to buy his statement piece.” Then there was suddenly a mutual understanding.
These photos were taken inside the boutique of designer Kate Mack Officiel, whose shop is located in Le Marais, formerly the aristocratic district of Paris which currently offers a very trendy, avant-garde shopping experience.
Somewhat recently a friend of mine, Parisian fashion designer Kate Mack had shared a few images on one of my social media networks of a particular sweater and I fell in love with it. Being in the United States, there was no way I could have been able to run over to her boutique with my credit card, so instead I sent her a message immediately, bought it and had it shipped to me all the way from Paris.
This was created with at least 4 different shades of autumn/winter 16-17 Pantone colors such as Campfire, Old Chestnut, Aurora Red and Potter’s Clay. Additionally it is reversible, the patchwork was hand crafted containing a variety of shapes (with the help of a sewing machine and serger, of course) and perfect for the upcoming fall season. I had promised Kate a photo of myself wearing this, which will have to wait until the humidity dies off. Despite the results of my recent attempt at a shopping spree, I am happy to have at least one brand new statement piece in my closet.
