Color Trends: Tints, Tones and Shades of Pink
A few years ago, a photographer with whom I work regularly and I were approached by a Creative Director in London with a request to work on a cover shoot for her magazine. She sent her original email to the photographer, who put me in touch with her for a better gauge on what the wardrobe preparation would entail.
It was a pleasure to speak with her, as she provided more than enough information for me to initiate wardrobe preparation. She informed me that we would be working with a well known entrepreneur, her exact measurements and sizes (tops, pants, skirts, dresses and shoes), a detailed description of the theme she planned to utilize and even a series of inspirational images. Unfortunately, Things did NOT go as planned.
Photographer: Jenny Ngo, Model/Celebrity: Kai Morae, MUA: MJ Trinidad (Makeup by MJ), Hairstylist: Nhung Nguyen, Wardrobe: Britney Porter and Alison Friedman. Neither of these two images were from of the photoshoot described above.
We ran into an unexpected problem after our photoshoot. The Creative Director of the publication send a group email to all creatives who participated (me, the photographer, and the MUA/hairstylist) informing us that the images from our shoot were not going to be used. More specifically, the editorial team was expecting to see an exact replication of the concept images sent to us all…. hair, makeup, wardrobe and photography. All things considered, our shoot took place in the fall and the wardrobe used in the concept images were mostly spring fabrics, colors, and garments that were no longer available.
One of the concept images included a light colored short dress… most likely Pantone’s ballet slipper pink, grapefruit pink or rose pink. Due to the color trends at that time, we used a darker shade that came closer to Pantone’s Tangerine Tango. Ironically, this year the fashion industry is adopting a lighter tint of pink… Pantone’s “Rose Quartz”, as well as a few other variations… for autumn/winter 16-17.
These are just a few of my “color chips” so far included in my pink color palette
What I find most remarkable about these tints of pink is how well they incorporate styles for both men and women. We all remember that episode of “Friends” when Ross accidentally washed his white button down shirt with a load of red clothing and it turned pink, and for everybody that commented on his “pink shirt”, he corrected them with “It’s not pink, it’s SALMON!” This season, men will have the opportunity to enjoy lighter and more neutral pink….. including salmon.
Here are a few favorites for men. It is probably worth noting that incorporating a few contrasting colors (such as tan, black, red, white or brown) enhances any look, regardless of how spectacular it already may be.
